Had big fallout with a poster on here the other day over Sels. Won't mention him. Long Forest fan. Saying he was unhappy with Sels, and I replied getting shot down.
Well again I played the position number of years. At a half decent level.
As for Sels on here.

He's another player who pulls us out the s****. Has amazing season and the odd bad play.
Gets descended into also ran.
Typical for me on a lot of Forest fans.
The good old conveyer of thank you see ya later. Just had enough lately.

Totally agree with you, my friend. After the opening game of the season, I was at the bus stop in Snention when two supporters came up and asked for my opinion on Sels and the goal he let in. I replied to them by asking if they saw the two excellent saves he'd made earlier in the game. They said nothing and walked off.

02 Sep 2026 17:39:04
Sels has been a quality keeper for us, Bowie. He shared the Golden Glove a season ago for us, and he's a decent keeper at this level.

02 Sep 2026 17:42:37
Thank you Vale, my friend. ?

02 Sep 2026 17:51:16
Well said, Ginger, bud.

02 Sep 2026 18:00:24
Great post, Bowie, mate.

02 Sep 2026 18:27:45
Sels has been unbelievable. When we signed him, he was about 2/3rd choice in the window, if I remember.

Great goalie... Been arguably our best value signing.

02 Sep 2026 18:46:38
He owes us nothing, earns his wages, goes home after matches. I'm sure, self criticising his game, he comes and gives his best in the next match. I for one hope he stays fit, don't you!!!. ? ? ? ?

02 Sep 2026 18:59:37
Hey, Bowie, you know I love big Matty. One of the best shot stoppers in Europe. Unfortunately, fans watch the likes of Pep and his sweeper-keepers and decide they want one. Clearly naive thinking, because you giants between the posts usually have the first touch of a T-Rex on testosterone replacement pills.

Matty is the best keeper we've had since Mark 'I love Pies' Crossley imo, who wasn't the greatest with the ball at his feet either. ?

02 Sep 2026 19:19:20
Brilliant reply, Cyclist. Love it. ?

02 Sep 2026 19:32:47
Navas was God, Henderson was Jesus, but Sels is a great option if you can't have either of the other two.

02 Sep 2026 19:53:14
Got to agree, two gold stars. Love Sels, but Navas and Henderson are a class above.

02 Sep 2026 20:32:55
All goalkeepers make mistakes, and all this b******* of playing out from the back puts unnecessary pressure on the keeper. Sels has been tremendous for us. Navas let in some very saveable shots. Great keeper and mover of the ball. But we should be very grateful for Sels. Well put, btw, Bowie.

02 Sep 2026 20:48:09
Missed ya rutters. Hope the golf and fishing doing well, my friend. Btw ty. ?

02 Sep 2026 20:49:02
We move with the times. Playing out from the back is what it is now. You can't do it, you're not good enough. Same as playing Glasner formation, you can't play it, you're out. It's all about money now, it's a business, get used to it.

02 Sep 2026 21:20:39
Sels, arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and one of the reasons we are still in it. Fantastic player and a fundamental part of the dressing room. Highly respected by fellow professionals.

02 Sep 2026 21:24:43
ForestCAgen, if you're talking value (as in players), Anderson and Wood would be for me well above, bud?

02 Sep 2026 21:45:35
Murillo, Melinkovic and Williams for me as value for money.

02 Sep 2026 21:57:47
Keyler Navas was better than Crossley and Sels put together. Sorry, but it's the truth.

02 Sep 2026 22:04:47
Stan Collymore was £2.2M from Southend, and everyone was moaning that we'd overpaid for an unknown. ?

02 Sep 2026 22:14:26
Milenkovic, Murillo and Williams, 45 million for the 3? Where else would you see a bargain like that. ?

02 Sep 2026 22:24:12
Blasphemer, how can you say such things about the 'Lord of Pies'. Crossley was our round caped crusader. ?

03 Sep 2026 07:00:53
Oh, to have Stan Collymore at number 9 now, what a player and goal scorer! I remember a game at Peterborough, Forest could be promoted with a win - 0-2 down after about 10 minutes! But the team rallied and won 3-2, with big Stan scoring a belter to win it!
Matt Sels is a fabulous keeper and has saved us numerous times.

Outfield players make mistakes, but they go unnoticed much of the time. A keeper makes a mistake, and it's highlighted forever!
Playing out from the back is, without doubt, the biggest load of crock ever, and it causes complete panic when closed down. Stop it now, Forest, please!
COYR.

03 Sep 2026 07:58:43
Agreed, Keeff. I think it's like the story of the Emperor's clothes. A myth, and it becomes an embarrassment when it gets exposed. Even if you beat the press, you are still a long way from the opponent's goal.

Look at Sels' long ball for Ndoye's goal against Liverpool. Long ball can be an attacking option, and the worst that can happen is you lose the ball near their penalty area, not ours.

03 Sep 2026 11:33:14
The best teams (and keepers) hoof it up when it makes sense, throw to the midfield when there is an opening, and play from the back when a defender has decent space and options up the field.

Good movement and a goalie who knows is the key.

Only doing one is stupidity. A lot of the recent complaints were that Sels was just hoofing it up for a lot of the game.

03 Sep 2026 15:00:32
I'm hoping OG will be a pragmatic manager like VP. If it's on, pass it out, if it's not, hoof it!
Cloughie always said he never asked a player to do anything he technically couldn't do.
A goalkeeper's core function should be saving goals.

Sels saved us at least 20 last season and the season before. Some saves were just miraculous.
It's like my mate who bought a racing pigeon and tried to get a discount because it only had one leg... He was asked, "What do you want, a flyer or a dancer?" ??

02 Sep 2026 15:54:18
Every club, from fans to owner to players to coaching go through the same season. Only time finds a good signing from a bad. All the obvious I know. But wisdom for me is a coach/ manager who can really really get that dressing room behind him.
Again, we learnt this from the Taylor/Clough.

Obviously never gonna happen again and yes, I know people may think here he is boring us with the past. But it isn't. Really is that simple. Here's my own quote above jug ears Germany. (Pri k) "The game is so simple, 22 x players go against each other and the best solicitors win, that's football."

Agree2 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 17:16:16
I'm sure Big M will be putting out testimonials for coaches if they last 10 x weeks. ?

02 Sep 2026 19:13:58
Most successful side I played in. We all loved each other, nights out, BBQs, kneeling on the sidelines, throwing up together. A group of about 16 of us, all united, and brought together by one man. Weirdly enough, a retired builder from Fester, his son played for them. He moved to Cornwall, and, in a space of about 6 years, won everything the South West had to offer. A couple of the lads turned pro and had decent careers. I think the crowning moment was playing an Argyle 11 at Home Park in the Senior Cup final.

Haha, I marked Paul McGregor; we stuffed them. Barry Hayles had an absolute stinker. But what im saying is, one man, he brought us together, he was basically our football Dad. Our ages ranged from 16-25, all local to South West Cornwall. Many of us moved on after the cup final, but I look back at those days as when I fully fell in love with the game. Thanks Mike, especially for the memories. RIP my friend. ❤️

02 Sep 2026 12:26:54
Actual changes to the Forest Squad.

GK
Sels
Victor
Bender (in for Ortega)

Defenders
Aina
Munoz (in for Morato)
Williams
Netz
Savona
Murillo
Milenkovic

Midfield
Sangare
Dominguez
Gibbs-White
McAtee
Schlager (in for Anderson)
Yates

Attackers
Hudson Odoi
Wood
Jesus
Ndoye
Kalimuendo (in for Hutchinson)
Delap (in for Taiwo)

Only 5 changes really.

There is one more space as that is only 24. We can bring in under 22-year-old players, hence the bids for young MFs.

My honest assessment? Slightly stronger squad if the MF does OK.

Weaknesses:

Do we trust Victor and Bender if Sels gets injured? I'm unsure.

Not left sided CB to cover for Murillo. Not much depth at CB if we are playing 3 at the back.

No club could replace Anderson as he's unique.

We just don't know whether Wood will be fit enough to perform (he's great when he does). It is an improvement is Kalimuendo and Delap do well.

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 13:22:39
Good appraisal cyclist, the goalkeeper situation is the one that bothers me most. Have to hope Sels doesn't get injured.

02 Sep 2026 13:26:04
That's a helpful side by side.

We aren't stronger, though, in my view, and we knew Anderson was leaving c6 months ago. We appear to have bid for loads of players.

We possibly/probably have a stronger manager, but that's about it.

We were in a relegation scrap last year, and unless MGW and Delap hit 25+ goals between them, we will be again, I suspect.

02 Sep 2026 13:46:35
It doesn't matter how long we knew Anderson was leaving, we couldn't afford a replacement as good. We looked into buying plenty of midfielders, Glasner thought might improve us, and they weren't available for the money they were worth.

There isn't a player in the Prem who had better stats than Anderson. We had no way to replace him. He's unique.

I also don't think we could stop Ortega leaving to play Champions League footy rather than being second choice when he was out of contract.

So, apart from Anderson and Ortega leaving, we are stronger in defence (barring injuries) and stronger up front. We've kept all our other core players.

We do have an empty number 1 shirt and an empty number 4 one. Maybe that tells us something.

To look at the window differently, have we signed any turkeys this window?

Actual incomings (Bender won't play in the Prem).

Diamonde.
Munoz.
Schlager.
Kalimuendo.
Delap.

02 Sep 2026 14:17:23
Let's see where we end up. I know you are very pro M, and all that, which is totally your call and not unfair.

I feel differently, and can't really say the squad looks this half.

A lot rests on Delap, I think, as MGW can't replicate his feats of last season again (or is unlikely to).

I just want a stress free season. Mid table obscurity, please!

02 Sep 2026 14:19:14
Bottom half squad at best.
Transfer market disaster. Players replaced by ones of no improvement. Marinakas rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

02 Sep 2026 14:26:21
Absolutely brilliant and helpful posts, Agen and Cyclist. Great assessment of where we are and where we might be in the future!
Superb and thank you both. ????

02 Sep 2026 14:30:04
Who thinks Taiwo and Hutchinson are better than Kalimuendo and Delap?

Who thinks Boly and Marato are better than Daimonde and Munoz?

Let's get it on record.

Marinakis couldn't do much about the Anderson situation? I see people looking for scapegoats.

If you want to criticise Marinakis, then replacing a coach who had us scoring goals for fun, and had the whole squad happy, and the fans united behind the team, was ridiculous.

02 Sep 2026 14:43:33
I think Hutchinson is a lot better than Kanthitawindow.

02 Sep 2026 14:46:34
Another astute post, Cyclist. Spot on mate. ??

02 Sep 2026 14:59:48
Hutchinson would be better in Pereira's system but not Glasner's.

Hutchinson is a better pacy winger and doesn't fit into Glasser's system as well as Kalimuendo.

02 Sep 2026 17:05:00
Seemed to have missed Diomande and Cunha from the list?

02 Sep 2026 17:43:10
But Larry, the majority of this team under VP, over 16 or so games, produced form that, extrapolated over a full season, would have got us into the top 6. Goals scored and conceded, top 4 mate.
Are you saying OG won't get a similar song out of them?

02 Sep 2026 18:21:15
Not really, Stokie, but a quality upgrade in players would make his job a whole lot easier.

02 Sep 2026 19:17:24
Good thread that, Cyclist. ??

03 Sep 2026 13:16:11
I forgot to say, Jair Cuhna is under 22. I think that might mean there are 2 places available in the squad still. So, we almost certainly are still looking for a MF and GK.

02 Sep 2026 11:51:47
Four things are absolutely crucial now until the January window.

With the signings we’ve made.
1. McAtee has to cut the mustard as a number 8.
2. Diamonde has to make the grade as our RCB.
3. Munoz needs to replicate his Palace form.
4. Delap had to stay fit and scores goals.

I know people will say we didn’t replace Anderson which is true but if OG is right about McAtee that might not be a massive problem.

Schlager and Sangare are both very capable 6’s.

Gibbs White and Ndoye along with Hudson Odoi should cover the 10 position adequately.

I’m saying by Jan 1st top ten.

Agree2 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 11:38:53
When is MrM going to release that the city and Rushcliffe councils are using him as a cash cow, he’s already agreed to pay the thick end of five million pounds towards so called infrastructure around the ground. Now I understand that they want him to pay for a new foot bridge (they want it to be wide enough for cyclists as well) to take pressure off Trent Bridge. Well the the the one that’s just opened cost 19 million pounds.

I’ve used it once to get to the ground and as I walked in front of the apartments to the bridge I was verbally abused by locals in the flats telling me that I should use Ladybay bridge. Then navigating the bridge was not easy as you have dog walking and the usual Lycra bike brigade who care not for a 71 year old just going around his business. So Mr M tell our greedy councils to go and do ONE and save your money.

Agree3 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 12:01:23
Wouldn't an actual cycling lane help pedestrians by making it possible for cyclists to not have to use the same path as dog walkers?

I love pointless haters. Car drivers are literally killing my child with pollution, but keep hating people who do something about it.

02 Sep 2026 13:00:08
Cyclist, news flash: you aren't going to uninvent the car, and a couple of cycle lanes aren't going to reduce pollution. Nottingham Forest bring millions of pounds into the local economy every year, and the council should be working with us, not against us.

02 Sep 2026 12:30:14
I don’t know the footpath you are referring to Vale but if it’s public you can tell the residents to do one mate …

02 Sep 2026 14:27:51
Good and realistic post, Stevie. ??

02 Sep 2026 13:33:01
It is public stokey, and cyclist don’t cyclists have to give way to pedestrians? A new bridge would cost in excess of 30mil by the time it was completed, why not re develop the suspension bridge from the meadows to bridgeford lot cheaper and quicker. But then they are banning parking for a 2 kilometre radius.

02 Sep 2026 15:54:17
It's unusual to have cyclists and pedestrians sharing the same footpath, Vale. I saw some awful disasters in Amsterdam every day, mate, where this is allowed.
Is the suspension bridge that comes out from near the Victoria Monument to near County Hall? That would be ideal if demarcated, just a simple line down the middle.

There is an offence of reckless/careless cycling, but it's rare for the police to enforce it. Cyclists are not obliged to exchange names and addresses and, of course, don't need to be insured.

02 Sep 2026 16:47:08
Private electric scooters are illegal and you need a provisional to ride the council ones. The police have done nothing about them. Either blame the government for not giving the police the resources to sort it out. Same with ebikes capable of going 60mph on the pavement.

The policing is non-existent.

It's idiots that are the problem. There are idiot car drivers, idiot cyclists, and idiot pedestrians. No point blaming all car drivers for it, or all cyclists/pedestrians. We all have to live side by side with complete morons, unfortunately.

02 Sep 2026 16:53:05
F*** cyclists can't stand em. Pay no tax but own the road. It's your noise pollution that effects ppl, cyclist. ? Ok ok always got time for you x.

02 Sep 2026 16:48:11
They need to drag retired coppers off their sun loungers sponging off their fat pensions and get them back on the beat! ?

02 Sep 2026 17:36:58
Once again you right stokey, problem is that there are no markings on the new bridge and it’s not all that wide. And on the point of the public foot path it was designed to enable people (walkers and cyclists) to go from Nottingham to Newark along the river except the councils forgot about a company in Colwick that backs onto the river and they have erected steel barriers either end of their property.

02 Sep 2026 17:46:58
Yes, can see me at nearly 70 with me pacemaker running after them mate then wrestling them to the ground if they play up... ??? I’ll stick with my sun lounger thanks. ☺️

02 Sep 2026 11:08:22
A few thoughts on our transfer window ……
I did express a wish for stability and 3 or 4 incomings to beef up the goalkeeping department, replace Ando in midfield, back up for Woody up top.
Got something like minus the stability ( or should I say continuity manager wise.
On the plus side, we trimmed our bloated squad now there’s no Europa ( and also League Cup early exit)
Promotion for Cunha who deserves it. Morato and Abbott leaving leaves us a bit light, depending on Savona’s recovery time ( and Yates as fall back).
Sels will have been a bit shaken by the Hendo stuff but he’s an experienced pro and now has guaranteed starter position until at least January.
Our accountants will be pleased and we can strengthen in January without having to sell any key players.
We have strengthened our wingback positions which will suit OGs plans
On the negative side, I note there are some misgivings on our signings.

But, you know what comrades, that’s true of all signings isn’t it? Delap has only played half an hour of football and he’s already written off as another “ Plankov” by some.
Realistically, there is only one midfield position to be filled alongside Sanghere and MGW. Between Dominquez, Yates, Schlager and McAtee. Both did well against Liverpool and will have their confidence boosted particularly by selection. Besides which OG will be encouraging our ball playing centre backs to step into midfield which should suit Murillo Cunha and Diomande.
All in all, I’m quietly optimistic. If it goes down the pan and there’s a big spate of injuries we can go again in January.

Agree2 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 08:15:03
Be fair to say I’m underwhelmed by the transfer business, we now have 4 central defenders for 3 places, a couple of injuries and suspensions and we are looking at Yates playing in the back 3, Diamuendo is also unproven in the prem, we have known Anderson would be leaving since April, on stats he was the best midfielder in the prem, and we have basically replaced him with a freebie from the Bundesliga, we are now basically relying on McAtee and Ndoye in midfield, 2 players who couldn’t put 2 games together last season? And magically after a decent half against Liverpool they are the answer, we have probably undermined Sels confidence, if you’re going to thrash about saying you need a new keeper, at least get one of your targets, I love Marinakis, but he keeps stating he wants us to be a fixture in the top 10, but the business he does doesn’t back that up, if he’s happy to just survive in the prem, fair enough, I’d understand that, but be honest and say so, instead of giving false hope, January is the hardest window to operate in, I fear we could be bottom 6 again and looking around paying over the odds in desperation to stay up yet again, hope I’m wrong.

02 Sep 2026 10:26:52
Very good post, mate... and welcome back.
Hope all's well.

02 Sep 2026 10:29:16
Rogie, thanks mate. Hope you and yours are all well too.

02 Sep 2026 10:33:02
I don't think you are wrong Stevie. Summed it up pretty well. Then again we seem to be able to bring in mid season this endless line of mediocre Brazilians that flatter ro deceive season after season.

When are people gonna realise Brazil were great in the 70s as were the West Indian cricket team. But both cant buy a win at the highest level now. It's over move on.

02 Sep 2026 10:45:06
Larry, I think if you keep on buying 'project' players, you are, by definition, always going to be a project, which is fair enough, but let's not kid anyone, we're not going to be top 8/10 competitive consistently with that model.

02 Sep 2026 11:01:20
Yates and Savona could play cb, as can Aina at a push. The worry is left-sided cb, if the manager doesn't like playing a right-footed player there.

I'll do a proper dive (I have shown the changes to senior personnel in the rumours section) and show what the changes to the actual 25-man squad are.

The most interesting point, for me, is that it is a squad of 24 and we allowed 25. I suspect they are keeping their powder dry for another addition in January.

Will the final addition be a mf? Any other incomings would mean losing someone from the squad - so if we added a gk and mf, someone goes.

02 Sep 2026 11:03:15
The end of the Brazilian season in January is interesting. We have Cauibano coming back if we wanted another wb, and we are trying to buy a young Brazilian mf called Andre (who would be an under-22 player and not affect the numbers), so both could come in.

02 Sep 2026 11:16:10
Cyclist, not sure I'd want to see Yates playing back 3 in a competitive Premier League match, or Savona for that matter. Fine in friendlies, we actually needed prem-proven players this window. We got Munoz, which is fine, and I accept Delap might be a decent, but, in the main, we got more projects targeted.

02 Sep 2026 11:51:00
Welcome back, Stevie. An interesting and reasonable post, but I'm hoping that you are being a tad pessimistic, mate. ? ?
Larry, can you name this endless line of mediocre Brazilians, mate. This is not a wind up, but a genuine request to refresh my memory. I can think of John Victor...

Skeggs and friends just catching up on old posts whilst soaking up the sun by the pool. Staggered by the response to my gentle banter. Brought to mind Bowie's lyrics from "Life on Mars", mate
" Sailors fighting on the dance floor
Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show " ? ? ? ?
" Cheap package holiday " indeed, mate.

? I'm at the 5 star Zafiro Palace Hotel in Port Andraxt. Check it out. Private pool and jacuzzi, all inclusive. The only downside is I'll miss the Spurs game, and it's a bit too hot to meander into Palma looking for a bar that will show it on TV (if it's televised, 3pm Sat kick-off).
Also, my wife tells me that we've just won big on the Premium Bonds. ? ?
And they say crime doesn't pay. ? ? ?
Living the Stokie dream.

02 Sep 2026 12:31:29
Ok Stokie, here goes.
Murillo – Defender. Decent.
Igor Jesus – Forward. Mediocre.
Morato – Defender. Garbage.
Jair Cunha – Centre-back. Mediocre.
Cuiabano – Left-back. Mediocre.
John Victor – 6'8" Goalkeeper. Garbage.

Danilo – Midfield. Mediocre.
Douglas Luiz – Midfield. Mediocre. Judas.
Carlos Miguel – Midfield. Mediocre.
Felipe – Midfield. Mediocre.
Gustavo Scarpa – Midfield.
Renan Lodi – Midfield. Garbage.
Not much talent in that lot, mate.

02 Sep 2026 12:42:24
Just to put things in perspective, our room looks out onto mountains to the right, coming down to the Med on the left. In the bay, as I'm typing this, there are 5 huge billionaires' yachts moored. One has a helicopter on its deck.
I'm thinking of renting out a dinghy...
So, no begging letters please. ????

02 Sep 2026 13:29:10
Thanks Larry, an interesting list...
12 altogether.
3 have done great for us (Murillo, Cunha and Jesus).
Cubiano and Miguel, never seen them.
Danilo had something about him, but was never the same after he broke his leg.
Douglas Luiz, injured and heart not in it. Glad he was a loan.
John Victor... Pray to your gods that Sels never gets injured.
Morato, a good squad player and stand by for us, especially in Europe and cup matches. Not Premier League.
Lodi looked ok, but not Premier League.

Scarpa, a bit of a maverick, not Premier League standard and distracted by his financial troubles.
Felipe did well for us but was in the twilight of his career and injured. He was Premier League standard but not fading. He throttled Bruno Fernandez, which guarantees legend status. ???
So, around half of them fairly decent, the rest demonstrate Mr M's scattergun approach. But at least the failures weren't big money or were loans.

02 Sep 2026 14:30:57
Fading, not "not fading". Felipe was a hit with the lady fans, so paid for himself. My wife, who hates football, liked him a lot. ????

02 Sep 2026 14:54:48
Just as a footnote I was amused about your comment about my “ dressing for dinner “. It’s “ smart casual “ here, no shorts or swimming trunks on the restaurants which I never do anyway.
What tickles me was that it reminded me of a CDO ( civilian detention Officer) who worked at the Bridewell when I was a Custody Sgt there. He was a devout Christian who always changed his uniform for collar and tie before he went for his lunch break ( which was usually sandwichs or fish and chips).

We used to send him out to the local breakfast takeaway place and order the biggest bacon, eggs, sausage etc butty which was billed as a “ FB” or “Fat Bar Steward”. He could never bring himself to utter the latter word. Comedy gold ! ????

02 Sep 2026 07:55:54
17 players departed. 4 incoming plus a goalie that will never play unless the ladies team have a bad run on injuries.
So, Delap a £30 million flop who cost 50 mill.
Diomande who might be ok but might not.

Schlager, some freebie journeyman no one's ever heard of.
Munoz, a 22 million right back at the end of his career when we have two of the best in Williams & Aina.
Marinakis masterclass. ?

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Sep 2026 10:20:03
Schlager is quality, Larry. He'll graft, win the ball and give it to McAtee and MGW. I've heard of him because I have a broad palette when it comes to football digestion. ?

02 Sep 2026 10:28:08
Red Robin, I knew of Schlager. I follow world football, and like to have a small bet occasionally. My little specialty is betting players to get yellow cards in doubles. Schlager has won me a few quid, he's decent, but lacks mobility. On his own, he will not replace Anderson. We needed another quality signing in midfield.

02 Sep 2026 10:36:05
I like Marinakis somewhat - his financial backing etc to date - but find his behaviour generally poor and (perhaps of most relevance) his total lack of an obvious plan to make us an established Premiership club.

OG is a v good manager, so that's good. I like Munoz and I rate the Swiss guy, but 1) Delap is unproven, and cost 3x what Fleming just cost, who is similar and scored 11 goals last year; 2) the Swiss guy has a track record of injury; 3) McAtee is unproven, Diomande the same.

My own view on this window - based on nothing - is that I suspect we don't have that much to spend.

That's the most logical conclusion. Bear in mind how much we've wasted at times since we got promoted.

And we've spent the last 10 days flailing around, leaking bids and looking a bit foolish.

Everything appears somewhat disorganised from the outside, and that's because it possibly is on the inside.
