Firstly, Stevie, if that's the case then total respect to you. You will get no more piss takes or jibes from me, ever.
I had a member of "The Green Death" on my shift at Central. Falklands veteran, great bloke, and a superb cop. Fit as a butcher's dog, he lived near Long Eaton and would cycle to and from there to Nottm City Centre every shift. He had loads of liberated Argentinian Army kit, water bottles, towels, belts, boots, etc. He passed all the tests for SBS except, crucially, orienteering. He couldn't read a map to save his life. The only bad thing I could say about him was that he was a Derby fan, but there you go, we all have a cross to bear, don't we?
Secondly, in answer to your question, I did all my 30 years' service in a front line operational role, uniform and CID, with stints on Vice and Drugs.
I reached the substantive rank of Sergeant, Patrol and Custody, but was lucky enough to do a few years as Acting Inspector and retire on an Inspector's pension.
I was never a traffic warden, but I did once put a parking ticket on a Rolls belonging to one of the Batchelors outside the Commodore. ???
I was in close protection and escort to the Polish Pope in Coventry in 1982, plus Cliff Richard, Princess Di, and, most pleasingly, Gary Davis, the DJ. ??

They all remorselessly took the mick out of each other. Some of it was quite near the knuckle, but I made a point of staying out of it...

Just for a bit of fun Stokey - I'll put in a bit of ex-Int Corps banter about each of your seven:
Royal Marines - great soldiers with a superb sense of dry humour. Slightly gay with a tendency to dress in women's clothing at any opportunity.
Parachute Regiment - great soldiers yet with no sense of humour, which has been buried due to their own arrogance. Wilt into the background when you explain that you have done parachuting too and then beat them in a BFT run.
Foresters - who.cares? Always an also-ran Rgt.
Submariners - even more gay than the Royals. Always smell very strange after 6 months submerged on a nuke sub with the weird stuff they put into the Aircon system.
RMP - universally hated throughout the Army. Mostly failed civvy police recruits. Usually billeted with the Int Corps for their own protection.
Navy radio operator - more civvy than a civvy.
Welsh Guards - brilliant at drill but rubbish soldiers in the field. Mostly foul-mouthed morons from the Valleys who would otherwise be stealing off their Mums.

Owen was a lieutenant in the Manchesters, killed by German artillery exactly a week before the Armistice whilst leading his platoon across a canal in France. I don't know about you, Stevie, but I think Stokey served his country in a way many Veterans could not have done. I admire him for that.
I can't imagine myself, or most of the other Veterans that I know, having the balanced-view, tolerance, and cool-headed nature that Coppers are expected to have nowadays.
Personally, I couldn't have done it.

It could have easily been the case that I'd opted for a military career when I was 18 and then 21. I explored that possibility and went for careers interviews with the armed forces and Police. But I was clearly being pushed towards Officer training by the former in view of my A levels then degree ( I'm not bragging or being arrogant, just saying how it was). I didn't fancy that at the time as I got the impression ( IF i'd got through the training) that I'd be stuck on a base in northern Germany, in the equivalent of a Gentlemen's club of "Ruperts" bored out of my head with the odd tour of North Ireland.Likewise the RAF and the Navy were subject of a shrunken Empire with fewer and fewer ships and nothing East of Aden.
No one ( particularly successive British Governments) could have foreseen the Falklands. Even back then the RN had more Admirals than ships. It was heading to where it is now, moored up in UK ports to save money and for maintenance. As per the HMS Dragon disgrace. We only have around 23 ships and subs on total. So I went for the daily adventures of a Police Career. Which I enjoyed thoroughly.
The road not taken eh? .
It's always amazes me that one takes life changing decisions when one is of an age where you know Jack ?about the world. But, here we are .

Stevie, mate, I can only say that the magnificent 7 on my shift were excellent policemen. I should also have mentioned that my Sergeant during the Miners' Strike was an ex Royal Marine, a veteran of Aden and a few other operations. He was a brilliant Sgt but not averse to a few, shall we say, skulduggery. He'd been a miner too (can't remember whether before or after his RM stint, probably before). I remember him chatting in a very friendly manner to an NUM photographer who'd been filming and taking pictures of us during the shift changes when it all kicked off. Having gained the bloke's confidence he asked to have a look at his kit then accidentally and on purpose "dropped" it heavily on the floor, smashing it to pieces.
He was quite a reserved bloke but after a few months living together in 20 hour shifts in a van he opened up and brought certain memorabilia to show us, including nicked IRA items from funerals obtained during house searches and about a dozen bodies of the Queen's enemies in the Middle East being dumped into a well. He always said there were certain parts of the world where he could never go on holiday. But he was a good leader, and I learnt a lot from him. He went on to become a very good senior detective.
I know what you mean, "across the water", but the Army were thrown into a situation they weren't trained for, in aid of the outgunned Police. Deeply unfortunate and tragic in terms of loss of life.

Stokey, that's my point. Marines and Paras are search-and-destroy, front-foot combat troops, not really designed to be a police force. Some of the RUC officers were amongst the bravest men I've ever met. We were basically there on a temporary visit; they had to live there with their families. I admired them immensely. I once met an ex RUC officer and his wife in the TBI after a Forest match. When he found out about my former life, he shook my hand and gave me his Ulster rugby hat.
He thanked me because he said he had worked with Royal Marines and was grateful for how we had helped keep their families protected. It brought a tear to my eye, getting words like this from a man, who I had no doubt had more courage than I would ever have. I'll leave the discussion there now, mate. I don't want to turn this into an edition of "All Our Yesterdays," but feel free to take the p**s. I’ve no doubt sometimes I deserve it. ?

I know what you mean about the RUC. I have an Ulster mate called Nev from my Police days who joined Notts instead of the RUC because, as he said, when you join the Police in NI then your whole family joins, and he didn't want that.
At Christmas he still sends cards with the message "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a Thumping 12th (a reference to the Battle of the Boyne, I believe)". ?

For me once again the manager hugely responsible for this result in his team selection, Silva and carvallho together against a physical strong championship team, I said pre season if we played them together championship teams would run straight through us, and that's what happened 1st half, Silva neat and tidy nothing more, carvallho for me, a little boy lost, cash scored a great goal, but he owed us that for pulling out of a tackle, to hand them possession for their 2nd, all very familiar, we lose Dawson and start shipping goals and losing games, very disappointing,

Yes this happened last season when Dawson was injured thank good ness we have Samba. If we don’t move higher in the table ie top 4 it will be harder to attract a good striker in January if that’s what we need. Psychology is important . Watson was slated last season now or at least was a hero - what changed! Carvalho is bereft of confidence? Perhaps a time in the reserves would help? Lolley is not playing like he can either. So the manager does not drop them after one gain as that would psychologically be bad . Vis a vis Bostock who had a great game in the cup against Derby but then apparently a bad game against Wigan. I think I would have chosen him last night rather than Carvalho. However Yates I think played well. Dilemmas for SL but a win against Reading is important to move up the league but psychologically a priority for the players.

Lamouchi has got it right for the most part with his team selection and the use of subs, think he got it wrong at Wigan and I'd assume he knows that, last night my only concern was seeing Silva and carvalho in the team together as my opinion has always been that they can't play together and it leaves Watson exposed and having to do the job of sow aswell and his legs won't take that, Yates has to come in to give us the legs we need in midfield while sow is out, but to be fair to Lamouchi Yates has been out for a few months and maybe he wants to bring him along slowly to avoid further injury although we have a huge squad some players aren't allowed to be picked so Lamouchi put put a more attacking side out on paper and if your honest what side can any of put out from the squad at the moment that will improve us?
Samba, grabban, cash, Watson and worrall are fixtures and pick themselves and we know although not playing well lolley will play the rest is a lottery until sow semedo and dawson are fit again even jenkinson gives us another option of playing cash on the wing, all a bit unfortunate with the injuries.

First of all millwall were well worth their point our keeper had an absolute stinker, and very few come out with any credit nobody else said anything but I thought hef had a shocker, the manager went all defensive despite the fact we were 2up i'm going to say no more about carvallhio nice free kick but spent most of the night giving the ball away, grabban was a total passenger lolly the only real bright spark thought we might improve but looks like I could be wrong poor night all in.

I wish the boss would start with Dawson and Murphy against physical sides. It looks obvious to me but not to the boss for some reason.
I can't help feeling like the people on here who reckon this system doesn't suit Grabban were right. He has still only scored a couple of goals in the league apart from penalties. Surely the boss can work out how to get more out of him?
Finally, for a defensive approach we are conceding too many STILL!
This team has promise but it feels like something is still missing. With these players how can we be on the back foot against Millwall?

Grabban is a goalpoacher,nothing else to his game,great when you play two up,but looks lost alone.
The defence looked poor all night and got a let off early when they hit the bar,doesn't help when they know the goalie will stay rooted to his line all the time and not take charge of high balls.
Heff had a very poor game getting beat numerous times in the air and we still don't look like scoring from corners.
We didn't deserve all three points,but after calvahalo goal that should have been it,don't think karanka covered himself in glory with the final two subs,sitting back and defending was asking for trouble with our fragile defence and dodgy goalie

This was a game for Murphy with A another playing tight off him. Grabban offers nothing in this one up role. Dias and Carv are like boys playing for their school. Wonder about with no idea how to move to shape things and are woeful in posession. Why the defence was so poor lastnight? Msybe we were too deep and invited pressure from all angles. Every cross they put in equalled panic stations. can't remember their keeper having anything to deal with. AK needs to stop showing blind loyalty to certain players, assess the opposition and adapt. If thst means more physicality than Fox then it needs doing. Geddy is back to his inconsitent best too. Lastnight was such a disappointment. Not the result the manner in which we went about it. Got to agree north Notts can't see us getting enough wins to be up there,we seem to keep grabbing a couple of goals from nowhere somehow,never create many clear cut chances then make individual errors at the back,to me we played with 8 men last night,grabban and calvahalo were non existent and we didn't have a goalkeeper.
You can't carry three players and get away with it.
Most hilarious comment I heard last night was in the car on the way home,Steve Hodge on the radio blaming the fans for shouting at pants to throw it quickly,took his time as usual and then panicked 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kalimuendo was a joke in some of the games I watched. Particularly in one Europa League game, he came on with a point to prove, and the ball kept bouncing off his shins. His basic ball control was laughable. He wasn't fast enough either to make up for it.

Stokey, that's my point. Marines and Paras are search-and-destroy, front-foot combat troops, not really designed to be a police force. Some of the RUC officers were amongst the bravest men I've ever met. We were basically there on a temporary visit; they had to live there with their families. I admired them immensely. I once met an ex RUC officer and his wife in the TBI after a Forest match. When he found out about my former life, he shook my hand and gave me his Ulster rugby hat.
He thanked me because he said he had worked with Royal Marines and was grateful for how we had helped keep their families protected. It brought a tear to my eye, getting words like this from a man, who I had no doubt had more courage than I would ever have. I'll leave the discussion there now, mate. I don't want to turn this into an edition of "All Our Yesterdays," but feel free to take the p**s. I’ve no doubt sometimes I deserve it. ?

Red Vale, I don't think for a minute we'll get any favours from the officials or VAR, but Spurs are under so much pressure at home, an early goal for us would turn that stadium toxic. We'll see.

Stokey, they went virtually full strength Wednesday, we managed our so-called big players. I don't think they have any advantage on that score. A draw wouldn't be a disaster, but if we could get an early goal, that would sort the men from the boys in their team.
