Has anyone been watching the retro matches on sky sports? We were on the other day, the first live recorded sky game from 92/ 93. We played Liverpool and won 1-0. Teddy Sheringham scored a cracking goal. I'd forgotten how good that team was, so how we went on to be relegated! Also saw Terry Wilson playing at CB alongside Chettle. Had forgotten all about him! We had Keane, Pearce, Clough, Laws etc in that side! It was great seeing Brian in the dugout, but sad to think that is also where our decades of downfall began.

1.) 28 Apr 2020 18:21:04
Clough’s stubbornness got the better of him (painful but true) that season . We had the makings of a good side but we were weak at centre back and lacked resilience upfront . My understanding is we could have signed Collymore at any time that Season. Had we have signed him anytime before Feb, life would have been very different .

2.) 28 Apr 2020 18:57:50
The drink had taken over by then 2 star and ronnie Fenton was covering for the great man.

3.) 28 Apr 2020 19:32:10
Such a massive shame . A couple of good signings and we’d have been ok I’m sure. Without the drink Clough should have had another 4 or 5 good years in him .

4.) 28 Apr 2020 19:44:41
Agree mate but all genius have a flaw and we all have a habit we do that isn't good for us.
Because he ran the club from top to bottom there was no one there to help him and to be honest he probably wouldn't have listened anyway.
We are just lucky that he came to forest and gave us so much joy.
Always be the greatest.

5.) 28 Apr 2020 20:41:49
I always thought the John Sheridan fiasco was the start of things, there as no better replacement for Webb but Sir Brian's stance on him seemed to unbalance the team.
Sheridan had proved himself at Leeds and continued at Sheffield W .
I thought another championship side cpuld have been built around him with the talent we had !

6.) 28 Apr 2020 21:05:38
To be fair carlo sir Brian never took long to make his mind up that he'd bought the wrong player.
Asa Hartford, Ramondo Ponte, who played the best debut I've ever seen, gary megson.
It wasnt just their football ability with clough, it was that they understood what their job on and off the field entailed.
John McGovern and ian bowyer would not have won anything under any other manager and that was clough's geniusto get players playing and believing they were unstoppable.

7.) 30 Apr 2020 13:40:51
Did we sign asa hartford- thought he failed the medical.

8.) 30 Apr 2020 19:36:35
We signed him he played three games and cloughie offloaded him.

Just playing devil's advocate here. We were told that the owners expected us to be in the top 2 after the backing AK received, or minimum of top 6. Promotion is still expected this season, and it's fair to say results under MON have mirrored that of the previous manager. Therefore if we don't get a win against Brentford, is MON under pressure, and will his job be on the line? Those cynical amongst us will say MON was only given the job to appease the fans. Another defeat sees us slip away further from the top 6, so does that trigger our revolving door on managers again? How much time do we think MON has to turn the team around?

1.) 08 Feb 2019 14:14:07
I think he’s gone in the summer

2.) 08 Feb 2019 15:36:59
Think he’ll be gone before then if results don’t go our way Redtree. His dated style of football won’t cut the mustard and he’ll either walk or get a Maranakis bullet.

3.) 08 Feb 2019 16:29:59
What his dated style 1 up front like that modern coach karanka played you mean??

4.) 08 Feb 2019 16:57:02
Blimey guys - sounds like you’ve given up already.

5.) 08 Feb 2019 17:29:54
Sounds like most of your pints are half empty, mine on the other hand is half full, if it doesn’t go to plan under MON, there will be a massive clearance in the summer and we’ll get rid of some dead wood around the club, only then will we see a change in our fortunes, Marinakis is no fool, and soon he will realise he’s been taken for one.

6.) 08 Feb 2019 18:07:02
Some of them sound as if they've had too many pints Demis.

7.) 08 Feb 2019 18:42:45
Hang on Stevie f, i ain’t no Krankie lover.

8.) 08 Feb 2019 20:09:08
TAP never said you was mate, but people keep going on about his ‘ dated football, but not specifing why it’s dated, compared to all the modern coaches who play the same set up,

9.) 08 Feb 2019 20:45:05
Well I'm looking forward to a victory tomorrow, going to blow the froth off a few with my pals watch us win and then go and sink a few more beers and then celebrate on the train home with a bottle of red.😀😀🍻🍻🍻🍷🍷🍷

10.) 08 Feb 2019 23:28:28
I’m sure if the results don’t come Maranakis will want to know why the 20 million he shelled out are sat on the bench.Murdoch you’ve hit the nail on the head with that post.

11.) 08 Feb 2019 23:38:19
Perks when the 20 million he shelled out were on the pitch,we still couldn't put two wins together,so what's new ?? 🤔

12.) 09 Feb 2019 00:14:04
Well someone needs hitting on the head and a nail would be a bonus,
Well? I needed "perking up" 😁😁😁

13.) 09 Feb 2019 10:08:35
'Can't string 2 wins together' and yet you're 'looking forward to a win'? Is that because we're in a 'lose one, win one cycle' FF? Brentford bogey team are likely to upset a full house again. A draw is the best you can hope for. I'd love to be wrong and Forest go above the minging Villa.😁👍

05 Sep 2018 13:30:34
I know AK is under a lot of criticism right now, for results, style of play and team selection. If he only has a handful of games left to turn this around, if he gets sacked, there is every chance a new manager will follow the same tactics. If we look at our last three managers, they have all tried to play out from the back, have 5 in midfield with one uptop, and have all played players out of position. It would seem if you want a 442 system, you are looking at old school managers like Warnock or big Sam. My point therefore is if AK goes, there is every chance we will be served up the same offerings. Personally I am undecided as to what the issue is. Is it the formation, or is our squad just not as good as we think it is?

1.) 05 Sep 2018 14:20:55
The issue is that the boss is not picking the players based on form.

Cash is on fire and gets dropped. Every time Osbourne is not in the team we look useless. The boss drops Osbourne. Murphy is scoring goals and the boss picked an off form Grabban (until he got a knock.)

Bridcutt came into the side and played really well? Watson plays two bad games and is obviously off-form. The managers response was to drop Bridcutt and play the off-form player.

These decisions are idiotic. Not good enough. If you don't play a player when they are on form in place of an off-form player there are two consequences. The team is likely to lose. The players are demotivated because they don't even get a game when they are obviously playing better than other.

If the manager carries on with this selection policy then he is a muppet!

2.) 05 Sep 2018 14:57:50
The Watson one is a simple answer, Watson is his captain. Grabban getting games is political because he’s spent £6m on him. I think people just need to get perspective on the whole situation.

Formations follow a meta game x formation beats y formation but y formation beats z formation which beats formation x. 4-4-2 is an old school formation, it’s balanced and allows for partnerships. 4-2-3-1 is a defensive formation aimed at breaking up play and counter attacking. My personal favourite is Liverpool’s 4-3-3 which relies on wing backs and 2 central midfielders providing width with the 2 inside forwards playing as wide strikers stretching the channels and a false nine occupying the pocket of space. I think we should adopt this formation personally but we don’t have the players to do it.

3.) 05 Sep 2018 15:10:33
Get rid of ak and bring big sam in that simples😆

4.) 05 Sep 2018 15:21:36
Well said Floresta , I would personally go y to the power of x ( x + y ) - y ( x - y ) I think that should sort it out

5.) 05 Sep 2018 15:23:04
My perspective is that it is the manager's job to pick the best team to get us promoted. If he can't do that then he is a plonker and will wind up getting the sack.

6.) 05 Sep 2018 15:24:09
And it isn't formations that win games. Players do. Work out who your best players are and find a system that allows them to play to their strengths. That is what a good manager will do.

7.) 05 Sep 2018 15:29:41
Fliresta totally agree, wether you like Liverpool or not they are a joy to watch and a succesfull formula.
Karankas could learn off klopp that you can play attractive football and succeed.

8.) 05 Sep 2018 17:32:10
Liverpool do play nice football in that formation but MR.Karanka(correct name used as I do not wish to offend) plays from the back and side to side.
As a lot of you have said the next 4 games are his chance to turn things around or he will be gone.
Surely he isn't oblivious to what's happening?
If fans can see things surely MR.Karanka can also.

9.) 05 Sep 2018 17:57:36
Floresta So let me get it right, because the manager has made Watson captain, spent £6m on Grabban Aitor plays them when fit.?

I thought being a manager was about picking his best 11, and players in form to bring success to a club, not keep picking players because they are his mates or he does not want to lose face.

Not many of us like Aitor's 4231 formation but Aitor favours that formation, because he is a do not lose and not a go for the win type manager.

Like someone else has said play to your players strengths, or bring in players you know their strengths suit your formation, sadly Aitor has done neither.

10.) 05 Sep 2018 19:04:27
As everyone is repeating themselves I'll have a go. Maybe he is playing the same style and using the same tactics from experience that achieved a playoff final and following season 2nd place.Im not saying he's right or wrong but if you were in his shoes and achieved success doing things a certain way would you not carry on with that theory?

11.) 05 Sep 2018 19:32:40
Interesting debate on formations and the one up front issue.

The regular 4-4-2 merchants Sheff Wed QPR Brum Bristol Millwall Reading are not exactly setting the league alive and free scoring.

Only Direby and Brentford regularly set up with 4-3-3

The free scoring teams WBA and Sheff Utd both play 3-4-1-2 or Leeds 4-1-4-1

The rest are usually playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1

We now have the personnel to match up WBA, Sheff Utd or Leeds. AK has the nouse to tweak his line up especially at home to play a more expansive game higher up the pitch.

Let the games begin!

12.) 05 Sep 2018 20:06:12
You could be on to something there red so what your saying his karankas formation is the right one and all the good teams are playing this formation 🤔except we aren't one of the good teams playing this formation because we can't play that way with some of the players he keeps choosing so we might as well play 4 4 2 because this bloke hasn't got a clue what he's doing lol next please taxi for kranky😆

13.) 05 Sep 2018 21:43:03
Quick call dg taxis

14.) 05 Sep 2018 21:58:08

I'm just putting a few facts out there. How you conclude "what I'm saying" is beyond me but then again I have you down as a 4-4-2 merchant?

The facts suggest we would be better playing with either 3 at the back now we have 3 strong quality centre backs or now we have signed a strong deep lying playmaker we can play one holding midfielder and 4 further up the park closer to the centre forward.

AK has more of a clue than you give him credit for and will tweak his system and selections in the coming weeks. He changed it at Boro so what makes you think he will not do it with his new squad?

15.) 05 Sep 2018 23:47:36
If the facts suggest we would be better playing 3 at the back ?
Which I agree with, then why haven't we seen it in 29 games so far?
You say he's flexible?
Looks as flexible as concrete when it comes to tactics.
His tactics are set in stone and very predictable.
I admire your loyalty to karanka red and hope you prove me wrong and he is succesfull and I'll be the first to pay homage, but alas my friend that's very unlikely to happen.

16.) 06 Sep 2018 01:50:35
the biggest problem is we have too many players

23 May 2018 21:03:54
I seem to remember when we were in the middle of our financial difficulties, Mel Morris took delight in pretending to have interest in a couple of our players. I would find it rather amusing now if we were to slip a cheeky bid in for any of their better players! I'm sure Mel would appreciate the gesture!

1.) 24 May 2018 03:20:46
It would be funny Murdoch.Theres probably only Lawrence I'd be interested in to be fair.

2.) 24 May 2018 09:17:15
Not vydra?

3.) 24 May 2018 09:57:51
He's probably off to Stoke but yes he'd be worth a go.

13 Apr 2018 13:59:03
It has been an interesting week reading everyone's opinions on our current and past Managers. I do have a question for you all, and would be interested to see the responses. From our current starting 11, how many, if any would walk straight into one of the teams currently in the top 6? I would say none, and it kind of highlights the gap of where we are now, and where we want to be.

1.) 13 Apr 2018 14:09:15
Think your right there murdoch, but then if you were to look at Millwall team man for man, then it could be argued we have better individuals than them?
It's not necessarily the best players that make a good team it's how they gel and how confident they are in there own ability and confidence in their teammates and the ability of the manager to get the best best out of each player.

2.) 13 Apr 2018 15:01:29
Agreed FF.
Afraid I agree with you too Murdoch. A couple might make squad players. Toby and possibly Lolly.

3.) 13 Apr 2018 15:27:43
Maybe Pants ? !

4.) 13 Apr 2018 20:18:38
Yes the manager is the key, what a job Harris has done . Despite an embarrassing quantity of attempts we can’t get it right can we?

5.) 13 Apr 2018 20:49:10
Thing is 2 star if you look at the table at the start of January they were a place below us.
Just shows what a great job Harris has done

6.) 13 Apr 2018 21:06:25
I'd say Watson plenty of experience and there is always room for a solid defensive midfielder

7.) 13 Apr 2018 22:04:55
Interesting that so few names offered up here. Reality is a high mid table finish next season would be improvement! I agree with the Millwall comment. Team spirit, and playing for each other makes a big difference. The other issue for us is we haven't had a decent spine of a team to build around for years.

8.) 13 Apr 2018 23:03:59
Reality for us is one thing the owners will want more than that I'm afraid.
You can see that in the signings,it's old pros with no thought for the future.
Personally I'd rather watch us build something and do well for a couple of seasons and get there with a sound base to keep us there.
No point getting there to get stuffed week in and out

9.) 13 Apr 2018 23:11:52
Millwall captain Morrison was on the radio the other night. His main reasons for success this season if I remember right was team spirit, their style of play, being a new team to the league, other teams not knowing much about them and low wages stating some championship players are on astronomical amounts compared to them.

Another boring defensive coach that sees 0-0 or 1-0 as the aim. He would surely take us down to league 1.

Do you remember when we under embargo, I seem to remember Mad Mel got lots of enjoyment from that, and was offering to buy, I think it was Britt. I did wonder if this was a bit of pay back? Even though they are desperate for money, they won't sell to us.

That's a terrible comparison to make RC. The players you mention all clearly had the talent and ability and you could see that. Taylor scores 14 goals in the twighlight of his career, I'm afraid we bought the hype rather than anything else.

You say that, but you only have to look at Lyle Taylor as an example of lower league players out of their depth in the Championship.

I wonder if they are still calm when he has the ball at his feet, or attempting any sort of kicking? We have been lucky that hasn't cost us any goals yet. I don't get the hate for Samba he is generally regarded as the best goal keeper in the championship. He has saved us more points than lost us.

Nice one FF79! I know some on here have some sympathy for Direby, but when we had troubles they all loved it, and mad Mel tried to put offers in to buy our players and unsettle things further. I don't want to see them go bust, but relegated, yes, and taken down with Rooney in charge that is a plus for me!

I agree bsered, Samba is an excellent keeper, and has done more good than bad. I was trying to remember the last good goalkeeper we had, and that was Lee Camp.

When Hovarth has played despite the hype he received he didn't look that good. I think Smith is a better keeper, but is let down by his distribution.
