Simon Cox and Jamie Mackie at Reading today for medicals

adz1968

1.) This is madness! a few days before the season starts :- (

{Ed034's Note - they are available and have been all summer. nothing mad about it, as pearce wants them moved on to bring in his own

2.) It wasn't cheap but I paid the taxi fare!

3.) Ed what is up with mackie I thought he was a good player for us and thought he would do very well this season and I know u liked the bloke because I seen u post good comments about him on hear I understand Pearce wants to bring own players in but get the players in then get rid of players he doesn't want would be a better idea what if the players he is after don't want to come or the fee for them becomes to high how do we then replace some of the quality players we are getting rid of

{Ed034's Note - I think Pearce wants a couple of out and out wingers and wants a couple of goalscoring forwards, to try and get goals within the side.
Mackie is neither and would end up being back up for both. the problem is he is one of our highest earners and the money he gets is far too much for a back up player

4.) Cheers ed makes sense I just hope he gets the players to do the job for us if anyone can it will be Stuart Pearce can't wait for kick off and your doing a great job as ever ed especially after last few days keep it up ed keep smiling

{Ed034's Note - mate it is the only way I know to live my life :-)

5.) Everyone says they like Mackie because he gives 110%. If I played for Forest (I'm not the real Radi by the way) I would give 110% but I would likely be pretty useless. People appreciate the effort but you need to offer something football wise as well. He doesn't have enough of an impact regarding assists or goals, the same goes for Cox infront of goal. Good luck to them both at Reading, they both can only do better than how they have performed at Forest.

{Ed034's Note - it is not just his effort, he is a good footballer and I think he'll be missed, but with this we have to trust Pearce and his ideas of how he wants the squad to look

6.) Agree with Ed. Mackie worked his socks off down the wings, closing players down and chasing lost causes but when goal chances fell to him he was next to useless.
Cox very similar, worked hard but as a front player, he ain't that quick, not strong enough to be a target man and his finishing. . again useless. So these two as very well paid strikers I think we need to move on and get better. Both genuine nice honest players but we need ruthless goal scorers

7.) It must be at least 40k a week back in the wage pot if these two do indeed leave.

Cox was bought in to score goals never happened Henderson scored more in his brief Forest career than Coxy did in two seasons.

Mackie hard working industrious winger, like the lad but just not good enough.

Again not upset to see them go just need Collins and Harding to go now but I think we should keep Halford as he can play anywhere.

Any news on who the striker is yet Ed?

8.) I've always agreed with you about Mackie Ed, it's hard not to appreciate his effort and attitude and he can be a very useful player. However like you I wouldn't oppose his replacement by a younger, faster, trickier, cheaper winger with more potential. I feel much the same about Cox and wish both well. Selling your high waged but hard working squad players is sad but it isn't a sign of anything more than that. I wish people wouldn't keep confusing this issue with the Newcastle sale. That was undoubtedly very disappointing but we received an explanation so now let's wait to see if it holds water. Keep faith all. I'm at the city ground with my two boys for the first time in 4 years on Saturday (it's their firs time) and nothing is going to spoil it!

9.) Fine with them leaving but if it's 1m for both, it's a good deal for reading and we get high wages of the book, although 1m seems a bit low.

{Ed034's Note - cox in last year of contract and value has dropped a lot. Mackie on loan by all accounts

10.) Not surprised by this and Ed says, they've been available all Summer. If they didn't feature in SP's plans, and we have to presume they dont, then shouldn't cause to much disruption to the first team. Even without these 2, we have a decent enough squad.

11.) Marco99, why is this madness? they are obviously surplus to SP's requirements, and therefore needed off the wage bill to balance the books, and hopefully free up cash for players that are very much part of SPs plans. We need a squad of 25 well paid decent players rather than 40 average ones. I thougt Cox and Mackie might be part of the plans, but they are not. Wish them well.

12.) I'm not denying he's a good footballer Ed, I just don't think he or Cox offers enough for the position they play. Especially for a team that wants to be challenging at the top of the table. Maybe he would work better in that role in a different system. I hope they both do well at Reading if the deal goes through.

13.) If they wanted them gone, then why not do it earlier? and get replacements in, instead of so close to the season? this will unsettle the squad!

{Ed034's Note - you cant get rid until offers come in. The seasons not yet started and all clubs are still bringing in and will carry on until the window is shut.
you are just looking for things to moan about now zzzz

14.) They can go in my eyes we didn't score enough goals by far last season, the last good strike partnership I can remember was van hooijdonk and Campbell and how long ago was that lol, we have lacked goals for far too long now any forward can go, but think questions need to be asked why forwards leave us and then do so well with other clubs has happened a lot maybe the service they get from the rest of team should be questioned.

15.) Did we not just sell Darlow and Lascelles so that we can reinvest? Now we're having to off-load Mackie and Cox to bring in Antonio.

I'm really hoping that we have some quality lined up and that Psycho is allowed to spend a fair chunk of that £7m we just brought in.

{Ed034's Note - we are off-loading Mackie and cox to create space. why do fans not understand pearce is trying to offload both and has been all summers?

16.) Small squad!
Hope we don't get the injuries like last season!b
Otherwise it could be a disaster!

any news on players coming in?

17.) Small Squad? I believe we have currently a 30 man squad (including Cox & Mackie) so wouldn't say is small, remember we used close to the most players used by a team last season, where the promoted teams used less than 28 players.

18.) But they didn't suffer the amount of injuries we did? And 30man squad that's not correct, even without mackie and cox it isn't 28 either! need to check facts before criticising! FTID

19.) I undertand completely that Pearce is willing to let them go, Ed. What I am saying is that I have my fingers crossed that the money from the sale of JL and KD will actually be reinvested, and reinvested in good quality players.

Call me a pessimist but having seen transfer windows go by in the past where we have missed targets, it wouldn't surprise that come September 1st we haven't actually signed that quality forward or extra wide-man/winger.

Forgive me for being sceptical of the current situation. We can't all be blind optimists.

{Ed034's Note - its not blind optimism, it is confidence in the manager

20.) By all accounts we have just in the last hour or so signed Antonio from Sheff Wednesday he's a winger and SP is talking to a striker so your theory is blown out the water wonky eye.

21.) A winger was needed even before we lost Mackie, imo. We now have Antonio, Paterson, Burke and McLaughlin who can play wide. Also perhaps Reid but I'd rather he be kept in that No. 10 role. Another wideman wouldn't go amiss, unless Pearce is confident that McLaughlin can fill one of those roles, or maybe Cohen is going to be used in a wide-midfield role. Would still rather have a proper pacey winger though given the chance.

And your mystery forward has not actually signed yet, Mr Bielefeld. Hence my scepticism. And if it's Britt Assombolonga, I wouldn't call that splashing out on proven quality.

Ed, I admire your positive outlook.

22.) We currently have a 30 man squad with those two. So we have ample size, just not in all the correct areas. A winger (Antonio) and a striker is just enough. Where else do we honestly need to improve boys? Come on! There's a lot of sensible points made here, and some rather fickle ones. Back the manager AND the owners. Let's all look forward to Saturday. If a striker doesn't come in, in time for Saturday, it's not all doom and gloom, fryatt is decent, as is Veldwijk, so let's see what happens!

23.) Also to the folk saying "why sell so close towards the season start?". Some deals aren't done overnight, especially in pre season, managers do exactly what Pearce is doing. Assessing the squad, trimming the fat ( so to speak) and improving in what they lack. Doesn't happen over night chaps. I'm sorry. Also like some of these sensible lads have said, offers need to come in first, until then, they play in games, and in rare cases prove their manager wrong (that they aren't in their plans, e.g Matt derbyshire, obviously it didn't work out in the long run, but you get my point).

24.) I would say we now need a striker, a central-midfield player and possibly another winger. Two out of the three would be nice, even if one or two of them are season-long loans.

You could say we have a 30-man squad but how many of those players are youngsters or unproven? I'd say a good handful of them are. Laing, Evtimov, Riera, Fenton, Polimos, Blake, Morgan, Petravicius, Rees, Demetriou, there's 10. I'd say in terms of full first-team members we have around 20.

25.) Current Squad - Darlow, Lichaj, Harding, Mancienne, Collins, Wilson, Fryatt, Cohen, Lansbury, Reid, Evitmov, De Vries, Osborn, Fox, Veldwijk, Halford, Lascelles, Hunt, Laing, Paterson, Blackstock, Vaughan, Hobbs, Burke, McLaughlin, Rees, Walker, Grant. Which I make as 28, Cox & Mackie make 30. Could even put Riera and Blake on that list too as have squad numbers.

26.) So of that 28, Dave; Evtimov, Laing, Rees, Walker and Grant are largely, or wholly untested. Blackstock is knackered, a few have questionable fitness history and Collins is unwanted.

As I said, a squad of around 20, give or take a few.

{Ed034's Note - and pearce wants a winger, two forwards and a cm

27.) We've brought in 9 players or so who in SP's eyes are better (or have the potential to be) than we had at the club. We have to let some go to make space. can't imagine Cox or Mackie being happy sitting on the bench all season which would dampen moral for them and the squad. If we get the lad from SW, there is still the loan window to get a forward and winger. The prem teams are yet to name their 25 man squad so I hope there will be some gems up for grabs then.

28.) Paul Taylor has just Said that we will sign a striker tomorrow he thinks it is Britt Assombalonga.
