Well, when I worked at Central I was Sergeant on a shift of 12 of whom 7 were ex military. We were routinely known as “F” troop and included 2 paras and a Royal Marine who had served with in the Falklands. I can only say they were excellent coppers and outstanding human beings.

My Dad (RIP) a great bloke was a National Serviceman in the RAMC (the Medics). Bored with his posting to Folkestone he volunteered for the Korean War which was raging at the time and he was sent to somewhere in Scotland by train in the dead of winter for special training ( which apparently included being blown up in a house with his mates then having to dig their own way out? ). He remembered his train being stopped by heavy snow and having to walk on his own with backpack, rifle etc through the deep snow around a big curving bay to the training camp at the end of it.

He was a very handsome man, a double for Paul Newman with the same piercing blue eyes) and he told us that some Scottish ladies were leaning out of factory windows as he trudged on, wolf whistling and inviting him in out of the cold but he assures me he didn’t because he was engaged to my Mum.

Anyway, to cut a short story long (?) the War ended as his training finished. Family legend has it that the Chinese had heard he was on the way and immediately surrendered! ???.

At least we both support Scottish Independence Ed7 though for probably entirely different reasons.
I think Micheal Collins is a fascinating historical figure. He reflects the tragedy of Ireland. But for the First World Ireland would have been granted Independence by the British Government without the subsequent bloodshed and Civil War ( although I suspect hundreds of thousands of fully armed and trained Protestant Ulstermen might have caused a few problems). He was reprieved by the British but eventually killed by a fellow Irishman in the Civil War. His comrades in the Easter Rising executed by firing squad from the Sherwood Foresters ironically.

The USA were the Allies of the Chinese NATIONALIST Government under Chiang Kai-shek against the Japanese and indeed continue to this day to support the exiled Chinese Government in Taiwan ( they still call themselves the Republic of China). The Korean War was essentially fought against the Chinese COMMUNIST Government under Mao Zedong by the Americans ( an entirely different kettle of fish).

Secondly, I entirely agree that politicians should get their little tin hats on and fight in wars they often enter into for reasons that turn out to be spurious. So, American involvement in Vietnam was because of McNamara's ludicrous domino theory, which postulated that if Vietnam, a poor 3rd world country, fell to the Communists, the rest of Asia would too.

However, you are wrong about Churchill, who often bravely risked his life when he didn’t have to. So he took part in the last ever Cavalry charge at Omdurman in 1898, was captured in the Boer War ( and escaped) and fought in the trenches in France as an infantry Major where he took part in raids across no-man's-land when he could have ensconced himself back at HQ.

If you get the chance, read the memoirs of his Police bodyguard Det Insp Walter Thompson who cited numerous times when he risked his life during the Blitz. Also, have a visit to the War Rooms where Churchill was ( reluctantly) persuaded to conduct the war underground. It was only realised after the Blitz that it wasn’t bomb proof against a direct hit. A bomb did land right by the entrance, but by some miracle didn’t penetrate. He was brave and entirely regardless of saving his own life.

Just a closing comment before we get back to the football. My Gran on my Mum's side was a Dylan from the village of Sneem in County Kerry South west Ireland. I was fascinated by the fact that she felt obliged to change her surname to the more English sounding name Dillon to facilitate employment in England.

This was back in the dark ages when it was quite legal for landlords to put notices outside their lodging houses which famously ( or infamously) read "No dogs, no blacks, no Irish". Anyway, it worked because she got a job in Nottingham and raised my Mum in the Meadows.

So I’m interested in history generally and Anglo-Irish history particularly and have visited Sneem, Ireland and Boston, USA. I’ve read about Cromwell, Wolfe Tone, the Irish Famine, Battle of the Boyne, etc. As I say I’m interested in history not points scoring and I apologise for any offence caused.

By the way, in closing, there is little or no historical evidence for modern day war crimes by the British Armed Forces except going back to Amritsar and before that to Napoleonic times. But I’d be happy to discuss this on other sites. However, back to the 9 cup finals we have to play in the next couple of months.
