Turns out that all the 442 merchants were right. We would never have scored 3 goals away from home by only playing one up front!

That's what you get when you play Lansbury in his correct position which 'defensive Dougie' refused to do.

442 is common sense
How can your Centre forward receive a ball from defence and also be in the box to score.
Playing one up front is always risky you invite trouble and put your defence under constant pressure.

1978 so most premier team managers and top coaches around Europe have no common sense?

IBM most have players that can and do get up with the forward very quickly unlike our midfield who have been instructed to guard the back four, thus leaving our loan forward on his own and with little chance of getting any goals, For years we have played with a loan striker with the results showing we don't score enough goals.
Only when you have quality players throughout the team are you going to score goals from all areas Last season One man up front (after Britt was injured) where did the goals come from not the man up front but from Antonio the winger.
You look at Arsenal the goals come from midfield the same as Man City Real Madrid Barcelona the list is never ending,
One up front on his own is completely useless.

And how many games have we played 1 up front and not scored a goal? Just enjoy the win for goodness sake.

1978 fully agree and thank you for backing up my point which is formations don't matter. As I've tried to explain to some on here for the past few months a 451 formation can be just as attacking as a 442 formation. Having two up top doesn't necessarily make a team more attacking. It all depends on what players play in these certain positions and how well they carry out their jobs. Here's an extreme example, if we played Barcelona who had one up front would we be more attacking than them because we played two up front? The answer is obviously no because they have better players who carry out their respective roles superbly. In fact they are that good at passing, moving and keeping the ball it seems at times like they are playing 5 or 6 up front. It's not the system it's the quality of the players which unfortunately is where we struggle.

Football is all about having the ball keeping the ball and what you do with the ball, Too many times we have it but give it away cheaply, The tempo of our football is far too slow I am not sure if that is down to fitness or not, but if you go out to attack the opposition from the first to last whistle to the last you put the other team under pressure.

Agreed but you can do that whatever formation you play!

You can but if the team selected is not capable of keeping the ball and passing it then you have problems, The deeper you play (as under DF) we just encouraged the other team into our half and in 90 mins of football we just couldn't stop teams getting goals and were never in their half so didn't score in fact I had to face one way for the first half and another for the second.

Didn't Spain win quite a big tournament with no out and out striker?

Yeah but their midfield are better than our strikers lol to be honest read all the above comments agree with most but all the games I've watched it always seems that the other teams always have better movement off the ball and are always in space yet our players look like lost lambs with no one to pass to.
