The club has apparently spent £3-5 million on agent fees since the summer, a site has suggested Lansbury was sold to help cover some of those fees.

You could be right.

Lansbury could have insisted he was going to leave either in January, or like you say free in the summer.

The site i read it on has seen the amount paid to agents then linked the two.

It is pure speculation on their part, i think he would have shone in Warburtons system.
