Some years ago a wise man said about football transfers " never buy anyone who is worse than what you already have". Do my fellow reds think this means never buy anyone who isn't better than your best player or do you simply buy better than your worse player and increase the average from the bottom upwards.

I would say from bottom up to me! As you've got to think if you have the best player in the world whether that is Ronaldo or messi going on the saying you'd never be able to buy another player until their form drops and they are no longer the best player in the world anymore!

If he bought a player who was only slightly better than the worst player, that would actually be pulling the average down, as that new player would still be below average. So if this wise man was also mathematically illiterate, he wouldn't have meant that.

Then if he only bought better than the best player in the team, effectively each new player would be a club record signing. As such the club would go bust pretty quickly. So I don't think it means that either.

He meant that the team will improve if better players are added to it.

But here's the real question, what makes a player better than what you already have? Torres £50m move to Chelsea? Andrea Silenzi to Forest?

I wouldn't take cliques too literally.

I take your point Pach. I was only trying to point out to those who claim this player or that player will not improve your squad as we already have better. I should of pointed out that by buying some one better than your worse player it then follows that you allow the worse plAyer to leave hence improving the squad from the bottom upwards

Fair enough ForeverRed. I didn't take into consideration selling the worst player. In that case, you are right, slowly but surely the team would get better. Cheers.
