This McGoldrick fee is high-level crazy talk. I'll put my hands up to having had doubts about the Assombalonga deal but it's clear on the evidence so far that Stuart Pearce is more astute in his dealings (and his ability to build a cohesive team) than I'd dared hope.
From old accounts on Villa forums, he sounds like a good guy and, looking at his past experience and the situation he's coming into, he's probably a good choice. Apparently very highly regarded by renowned no-nonsense control-freak Martin O'Neill and he's young for a role like this too (which I like).
They bought him because the price was so attractive; whether he ever plays for them or not, as a young English keeper attracting attention and developing his game in the Championship, he represents a solid investment.
@camnffc: I believe the content of my post is correct; I didn't say anything about a player being proven at a particular level - merely that I'd read that the fee was the largest paid for a player from a third-tier club. I know very little about the guy and I certainly hope that we have a player of Rhodes' quality at a reduced price but, like I said (and I think it's a fair observation), I consider there to be a certain amount of risk involved.
@polskared: Stan Collymore was a phenomenon when we signed him; I'm not sure this is quite the same thing - and I read somewhere it's the largest fee ever paid for a player from that division so there's a clear risk being taken here. Here's hoping it pays off.
